6 Daily Dental Care Tips for Preventing Tooth Decay

Tooth decay, also known as dental caries, is the destruction of tooth enamel and dentin by acid-producing microorganisms. Cavities are holes in teeth resulting from tooth decay. Both decay and cavities are preventable with excellent oral hygiene, regular visits to the family dental center for checkups and cleanings, and a balanced diet.

Here are 6 daily dental care tips you can follow for preventing tooth decay.

  1. Brush your teeth at least twice a day

You should commence brushing your teeth in the morning and after dinner. It is best if you use fluoride toothpaste and brush at least twice a day. Make sure that your brush reaches every corner of your mouth and thoroughly clean your teeth and gums.

  1. Floss your teeth daily

You should floss at least once every day to remove bacteria from between your gums and teeth. Brushing your teeth with a toothbrush won’t alone remove bacteria or plaque. You should brush in between your teeth with interdental cleaners or dental floss. This will help you remove food and plaque and lessen the chances of developing dental caries.

  1. Use a fluoride-containing mouthwash to rinse your mouth

You can use a fluoride-containing mouthwash daily to rinse your mouth. Alcohol-free and sugar-free rinses are recommended as they won’t damage the soft tissue in your mouth or erode tooth enamel.

  1. Eat nutritious and balanced meals

Tooth decay can be reduced by following a healthy diet. A healthy diet includes foods like raw vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. Avoid sugary and starchy foods because these foods will stain your teeth. Sodas that contain citric acid or phosphoric acid can also damage tooth enamel, and the phosphate in these beverages erodes tooth enamel, causing cavities. Fruit juices contain large amounts of sugars which also erode tooth enamel.

  1. Take supplemental fluoride, if required

If you have recurrent or severe tooth decay, you should take dental fluoride supplements. You should consult your dentist and check if you need to take fluoride supplements.

  1. Visit your dentist for regular check-ups

You should visit your dentist regularly to prevent dental decay and cavities. In fact, you can keep your teeth healthy by adhering to good oral hygiene habits like brushing twice a day, flossing daily, rinsing with fluoridated mouthwash, and ensuring that you get a dental check-up every 6 months.
