4 Types of Facial Implants for Symmetry and an Enhanced Appearance

Facial implants are small devices made of biocompatible material that are inserted into different parts of the face to augment your features. The result is usually improved facial contours and an enhanced appearance. Because there are many facial features that might need improvement, surgeons like Dr. John Freeman naturally provide different types of facial implants.

They use these materials to treat everything from flat cheekbones and sunken eyes to a weak jaw and receding chin. If you are considering a facial augmentation procedure to liven up your appearance, here is a look at four types of implants and how they can change how you look.

Lip Implants

Lip implants are made from expanded polytetrafluoroethylene or silicone and are usually added to one or both lips for definition, volume, and fullness. They are more permanent than fillers and don’t require multiple treatments for lasting results. In fact, the only way to get rid of lip implants is to have them surgically removed.

Depending on your needs, your doctor can use lip implants to add volume to your lips, reduce the appearance of wrinkles around them, add the distance between the top of your top lip and the bottom of your bottom lip, or change how many teeth show when you smile. Lip implants, however, cannot plump up thin lips where there is no tissue for insertion or correct asymmetry.

Cheek Implants

Cheek implants are used in check augmentation procedures to correct sunken cheeks, flat cheekbones, and other aesthetic problems that may be caused by injury, age, or genetics. Cheek implants can be malar or submalar. Whereas malar implants produce high or more prominent cheekbones, submalar implants eliminate the appearance of a sunken cheek. Both types of implants are inserted through small incisions made inside the mouth below the upper lip and are made from soft silastic materials.

Chin Implants

If you have a receding chin, what most people call a “weak” chin, your doctor may recommend chin implants. A receding chin can throw the rest of your features out of balance, causing your neckline to “disappear” or your nose to appear too big. Chin implants give your jaw a stronger, smoother outline and make your chin project more so your features are more harmonious. They are made from the same material as cheek implants and feel like natural chin tissue to the touch. Once implanted, usually through the crease under the chin, they also do not shift.

Jaw Implants

Jaw implants are the solution to a ‘’weak” or narrow jaw. They are usually inserted alongside cheek implants so the two can support each other and lower the risk of implant failure. During jaw augmentation, your doctor inserts the jawline implants between your cheek and the bottom of your gums. They then subtly change the volume of your jawline, preventing it from fading into your chin and neck. The procedure makes your lower facial profile more striking.

Discuss Facial Augmentation with Your Provider

Facial implants make it possible for you to define your facial features, improve their symmetry, and reduce the signs of aging on your face. Simply put, they give you a more striking, more attractive appearance. Facial augmentation treatments are usually customized to help you meet your aesthetic needs, which means you have a say over the type of implants you get.
